Roots of Life Showcase 2022

Updated: Jun 2, 2022

Free admission, open to public.

On March 27th, at 3 p.m. Roots of Life Performing Ensemble will be appearing at Mount Nittany Middle School, with the Helping Hands Pantry hosting a food drive to accompany the performance. Admission is free!

Roots of Life, or RoL, is a West African dance, voice, and drumming ensemble, performed by students from grades three to twelve. Led by Debra Daggs and Dr. Kikora Franklin, RoL brings energy, education, and entertainment together in order to discuss socially relevant concepts and uplift their audiences. This performance’s theme will be “A Seat at the Table.”

On Sunday, along with the RoL performance, Dancing Against Hunger will be joining with the Helping Hands Pantry to host a food drive. Helping Hands Pantry is SCASD’s food bank, run by Allayn Beck, Morgan Bechdel, and Cindy Sergeon-Smith in partnership with the State College Food Bank. It provides food, personal hygiene products, and household cleaning supplies as they are needed, distributing supplies to families on request.

With the Helping Hands Pantry and RoL, DAH will help fight hunger through social empowerment and dance education. Collected food donations from the RoL performance will go directly to the Helping Hands Pantry, which can then be allocated to families in need. In combination with an uplifting and socially educational experience, donated food will fight against hunger in State College.

Again, the performance and food drive will be on Sunday, March 27th, at 3 p.m. at Mount Nittany Middle School. All ages are welcome, and we hope to see you there!
